"Racial segregation as a way of life did not come about as a natural result of the hatred between the races immediately after the Civil War. It wasn't until the early part of 20th century that the white population - following the lead of their Northern countrymen - began enacting laws to restrict the movement of the African American population. Yeah, I didn't, either. The segregating of the races was a relative newcomer to the region. In fact, during Reconstruction, there was considerable economic and political mixing of the races. Woodward convincingly shows that, even under slavery, the two races had not been divided as they were under the Jim Crow laws of the 1890s. called it "the historical Bible of the civil rights movement."
