Typically, however, the other pirates often fail to take her seriously – right up until she slits their throats. However, after a few sentences I could not help but be hooked: Daughter of the Pirate King is written with just the right amount of humor to make the clichés acceptable, and the first-person narration sings with personality. I was skeptical when first I picked this book: I like strong female character who are believable, so a red-headed swashbuckling pirate princess raised serious alarm bells. As long as you’re willing to give up figuring out how their world is created and where they may be and in what sphere, the very existence of the characters becomes more important than their provenance. It all seems so far fetched but the narrative pacing is so well done and there’s enough excitement and tension that doesn’t necessarily involve death but more near-deaths that I couldn’t put the book down until I got to the end in one sitting. However, Alessandra solves the mystery of who murdered the Shadow King’s parents and their romance resumes and all’s well that ends in murder.
All we ever find out about the Shadow King is his ability to control the Shadows and possibility for long life (hundreds of years) as long as he doesn’t give up his shadows powers by falling in love with a human. The romantic love that develops between the Shadow King and Alessandra seems improbable as well as doomed from the start. She is cunning and self-assured, treacherous, villainous and one can’t help but wonder where this would all lead in the end.
She sleeps with whomever she felt like and kept blackmail material on all of them. Once I moved past questioning the moral dilemma that the character did not seem to possess, I was most intrigued by the main character’s lack of any sense of remorse for any of her actions. It starts out with a matter of fact admission of a calculated murder committed by the narrator, Alessandra, in a fit of rage after being spurned by her first love. T he Shadows Between Us is a fast paced Fantasy and Romance wrapped in a Mystery that resolves itself neatly in the last few pages of the book.
